In May of 2014 it was reported by the conference board, a New York based nonprofit research group that 52.3% of Americans were unhappy at work. The survey asked the workers how they felt about their wages, promotion policy, sick leave, vacation policy, health and retirement plan. Now I don’t know about some of you guys but in 2014 I was among the 52.3% of Americans unhappy with their job; And I wasn’t just unhappy with vacation time or the promotion policy, I was unhappy all across the board. I dreaded Sundays because I knew that I had to go to work on Mondays. I burned through my vacation time as soon as I would get it, I didn’t like being told what to do, I didn’t like the frequent procedure changes, I hated having to ask permission, I hated having to deal with co-workers that I didn’t like; I didn’t like asking for permission to do anything. Working a 9-5 for me always sent me on a day to day emotional roller coaster; I had to mentally prepare myself before walking into the building. Until one day I said to myself “this can’t be life…”. Bottom line. Working a 9-5 was not for me. I had so many questions like, “So what do I do if I don’t work a job?” “How do I make a living?” “What will I do?” I come from a family of hard workers who dedicate decades to one job, and you’re expected to do the same thing, grit your teeth, suck it up, ignore your feelings and go to the same job you hate for 30 years. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t ignore it, my soul was screaming and it was trying to tell me something and I was going to find out. So I embarked on a journey to see exactly what it was my soul wanted me to do. I am writing this for those who are not completely fulfilled with their current life, and not just with their jobs, it can be your relationship with others, living situation, whatever it may be; there is a way to find out if there are some changes you need to make. Now society will trick you into believing that you will never be fully happy, or fulfilled; or that you’re wrong for wanting to see if the grass is greener on the other side. Some of us are not taught how to listen to our inner self. When we were younger and we didn’t want to go to school, do our homework or brush our teeth, our parents would say “sometimes you have to do things that you don’t want to do, and when you get older you’re going to do a lot of things that you don’t want to do”. To some degree that may be true. But what has happened is that this statement has become a belief programmed in your head since a child that you apply to your adult life. It has taken on a new meaning, you have learned to grit your teeth and continuously do things that you don’t want to do. “I hate this job, but I got to pay the bills” “this relationship is not where I want it to be but I have invested too many years with this person” “I always wanted to be a dancer, but my parents said there’s no longevity in that so I went to college to be a lawyer”. If you were like me growing up and didn’t have the luxury of having a therapist for a parent or grew up in a free spirited way of thinking environment, then you probably weren’t brought up to pay attention to the connection between your emotions and circumstances AKA triggers. Certain circumstances invoke certain emotions. Some good, some bad, it is up to us to recognize them. This will enable you to make better decisions on your own behalf, because you will know what works for you and what doesn’t. Now I want to give you guys a little, fun quick scenario to think about. What happens if you drive your car every day with the emergency brake on and don’t notice it? The breaks will eventually fail, the brakes will become overheated and damaged, you could warp a drum or disc, you could cause the linings or adhesive to fail, or the linings could crack. So when you are driving 50 miles per hour and it’s time to press on your breaks, they don’t work and you could crash. Now this could have been prevented if maybe you checked the dashboard indicators letting you know that the emergency brake was on, even knowing your car enough to know that its driving different, or check your rear view mirror to see that big trail of smoke behind your car. You see where I’m going? Your body is no different. It will let you know when something is not right. Having negative emotions, or responses are the first indicator telling you that something is not right. Now if you choose to ignore these indicators, it can manifest physical ailments; sickness, tumors or cancers. To avoid the worst case scenarios, begin by paying attention to what your soul is telling you. What is a soul? It is the spiritual immaterial part of a human being or animal. It is the principal of life, feeling, thought, and actions in humans, regarded as a distinct entity separate from the body. It is the spiritual part of humans as distinct from the physical part. Your soul holds the answer to your purpose, which is the very reason why you’re here right? Your inner thoughts, feelings, and ideas is your soul’s way of guiding you to your purpose. If you have been living your life unfulfilled, unhappy, or with some sort of inner conflict; you are perhaps driving in the wrong direction of your purpose. It is okay to take a new course of direction, let your soul take the wheel it knows the way. You will know you are on the right path by the way it feels. It will feel good, free, joyful, peaceful. You will have the inner knowing that this is right. You may even feel some fear every now then and again, but that’s okay it’s just your ego that’s afraid of the unknown. Pray, meditate and ask for guidance. Ask that you become aware and sensitive of your inner self and what it is telling you. Don’t be afraid to leap now, your soul has been waiting too long for you to jump. There may be some bumps along the way but that’s a part of your soul story and it is a lesson behind it, and knowledge to be gained. Don’t get stuck and suffer in silence in a situation or circumstance forever when it was only meant to be small part of your story. I love you all, I pray that you let your soul speak; and I pray that you listen. -Soulful Sistahs Speak! Author: Angel AuraSpiritual Teacher. Healer Facilitator. Manifestation Coach.
